Decarbonizing the global maritime industry
The World's 100.000 commercial vessels consume around 300 million tons of fuel every year making shipping accountable for around 3% of global carbon emissions. We drive a sustainable decarbonization of the maritime industry by 2050 through collaboration, applied research and regulatory reform.
The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping is real climate action. We are a not-for-profit, independent research and development center looking to accelerate the transition towards a net-zero future for the maritime industry. With our partners, we drive and facilitate the development and implementation of new technologies; build confidence in new concepts and mature viable strategic ways to drive the required systemic and regulatory change.

Despite being labeled a hard-to-abate sector the shipping industry has a strong commitment to reduce CO2 emissions significantly towards 2050. The race is on and accelerating an industry wide transition requires technology advancements, industry leadership and public ownership through global regulation and policies.
The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping combines deep specialist knowledge with an industry wide perspective through strong partnerships. We drive the development of the needed technological solutions and provide strategic guidance. Our R&D activities are structured to support the need for technological advancements and we assess the individual solutions, their gaps and risks to increase transparency and de-risk decision making.
